After overthrowing and defeating the Shadow Lord Balfure, the kingdoms of Avalyne are finally at peace. King Dare after marrying his beloved elven princess Arianne of Eden Taryn, has begun the long process of restoring Carleon after years of occupation. The future seems bright with Arianne’s announcement that they are about to be blessed with their first child.

However, Arianne’s happiness is short-lived when the Queen learns that secret forces are conspiring to return an ancient evil to the land more powerful than the Shadow Lord they had just vanquished. Intending to use her unborn babe as the vessel for its dark spirit, this ancient evil will return to Avalyne as the heir to its most powerful kingdom. Determined to protect her very mortal husband, Arianne embarks on a quest to prevent the theft of her son’s life.

With her friends, the warrior Celene of Angarad and Keira of the Green, Arianne sets out on a journey to the distant Frozen Mountains where the damning spell is being prepared for her child. It is a race against time as the trio crosses the wondrous kingdoms of Avalyne while at the same time battling its many, lurking perils. This is a story of adventure and magic, where Arianne finds that she has to be stronger than she has ever been to save her family and prevent Avalyne from falling into darkness again.

A true gem for fantasy lovers

Sometime prior to reading The Queen of Carleon, I read Thackeray's The Guardian: Volume One: The Troezon Heir. I remember being impressed by her evocative writing style. Apparently her skill wasn't limited to only science fiction, as her handling here of young adult fantasy is as formidable as ever.

Arianne is a charming protagonist with none of the damsel-in-distress affliction that harms other heroines in her position. Nor is she overly serious, despite the heavy subject matter wherein the fate of her child and the kingdom itself hang in the balance.

The tale is classic fantasy, with long journeys, epic battles, and friendships that endure even in times of hardship. It's appropriate for readers of nearly any age, but still interesting enough for an adult read. A true gem for fantasy lovers.

I couldn't put this one down

I love fantasy books but, unfortunately, don't find many of them to be page-turners. That wasn't the case with The Queen of Carleon. From the beginning, I was pulled into this world and its characters and became invested in their lives and in the outcome.

The story centers around the Queen (duh), whose name is Arianne. She becomes pregnant but finds out that her unborn child is in mortal danger by evil forces. What is great about this twist is that she is key, along with the aid of a few sidekicks, to saving her family. So, Arianne sets off on a quest to the far reaches of Avalyne with her friends Celene and Keira to confront the dark forces that want to destroy her unborn child and her kingdom.

I found this book to be very well-written and that character development to be in depth and well thought out. Events in the story made sense to me and there was a constant level of suspense that kept me interested and wondering what was going to happen next. I was particularly drawn to the main character for several reasons. She is tough and determined as well as person who has a lot of honor and respect for others.

I am so glad that this is a series book because I am looking forward to reading much more from this author, particularly books with these same characters and setting. I highly recommend this one to anyone who loves fantasy with strong characters and plot lines.

Queen of Carleon

I really enjoyed reading this book. The author did a fantastic job of creating a world that is absolutely filled with characters that are vivid and interesting! The writing is descriptive, and details the author provides are wonderful it is obvious that the author took great care in the writing of this book. The plot is excellent, the story flowed from scene to scene effortlessly, and it definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat turning page after page to see what is coming next!

This book is a story of love, loss, magic and adventure. Imagine you find out that you're going to have a child, the happiness that you feel is immediately tempered by the knowledge that your child's soul will belong to the dark. The author truly has a gift of writing in a way that you become totally engrossed in the world she has created, and you truly care about what happens to the characters. You feel happy for them, you feel sad for them, and you hope that in the end, good will prevail over evil.

An excellent read for a cold winter day! I highly recommend!
